Iron Range Newspaper Obituary Index, 1966 through 2001

The Range Genealogy Society , organized in 1968, clips and indexes obituaries from central Mesabi Iron Range area newspapers. The bulk of the obituaries are from the Hibbing, Chisholm, Buhl, Virginia and surrounding communities. Quite often, persons originally from the Iron Range, who died elsewhere, have their obituaries published locally. The collection is by no means wholly inclusive. For death certificates and death dates of persons who are recorded in St. Louis County contact St. Louis County MNGenWeb Project.

The obituary file includes the first, middle and last name of the deceased. An AKA (also known as) entry includes maiden names and nicknames if they are noted in the obituary. In the case of adopted males or of name changes, the birth parents surname is also indexed.

Birth dates and place of birth are included when they were available. Occasionally birth dates and age do not correspond. No attempt was made to reconcile these discrepancies. Sometimes only the month and/or year of birth are noted. For St. Louis County births check the St. Louis County MNGenWeb Project, Death dates and place of death are noted when available. Occasionally obituaries or notices of death appear some time after the death and do not give the exact date. This most frequently occurs for persons residing away from the Iron Range. Place of death is indicated by state, city or foreign country depending on the published information.

The index includes the place of internment (i.e., city, township, name of cemetery) or if the individual was cremated. Grandview Memorial Gardens in Hibbing is recorded as GMG.

The "comments section" will note if there is a photograph with the obituary or any other unusual information recorded.

The index includes the volume and page number of the Range Genealogical Society Obituary Book that the clipping appears in. To order a copy of the actual obituary contact the Research Center.
