The activities of women on Minnesota's Iron Range has always been important, even during the early part of the 20th century, when the region was heavily tilted towards men who were engaged in the timber industry and mining. Even in those days, women were a powerful force in the business community of the region. Many a family fortune was built upon the back-breaking labor of cooking, laundering, and serving the men who were employed by industry.

Through the 20th century, figures such as police woman Anna Fish, Kinney Mayor Mary Anderson, and civil rights advocate Lois Jensen have been a powerful force in the Iron Range social, civil, and business arenas.

Please take a few moments to examine some of the items documenting women's activities held in the Archives collections at the Iron Range Research Center.
